Most traders cannot state their real win rate, their best session, or the one pair quietly bleeding their account. If you are trading on feel, you are repeating mistakes you cannot see. The fix is not a new strategy. It is measurement.
Win rate is a vanity metric
Ask a struggling trader how they are doing and you will usually get a feeling, not a number. "Pretty good lately." "I think mornings work for me." Feelings are not data, and they are reliably wrong about money.
Even win rate on its own lies. A 70 percent win rate sounds great until the 30 percent of losers are huge and the winners are tiny. A 40 percent win rate can be highly profitable if the winners dwarf the losers. The number you actually need is what you make per trade on average.
The three numbers that matter
| Metric | What it tells you | Healthy zone |
|---|---|---|
| Win rate | How often you win | Meaningless alone |
| Profit factor | Gross profit divided by gross loss | Above 1.5 |
| Expectancy | Average profit or loss per trade | Positive, and stable |
Expectancy is the one that compounds. A small positive expectancy, repeated across hundreds of trades, is what an account actually grows on. Everything else is commentary.
Why your memory lies
You remember your best trade and your worst trade. You forget the long middle of small, ordinary results where your real edge lives or dies. Recency bias makes last week feel like the trend. A good Friday rewrites how you feel about a losing month.
The only cure is a record. Not a vibe, not a rough sense of it, a log that does not flatter you.
How to find your A+ setup
Tag every trade by setup, session, and pair. After thirty or forty trades, the data sorts itself. You will see the one or two setups carrying your account, and the loser you keep taking out of habit. Then you do the obvious, hard thing: you cut what loses and double down on what pays.
Most traders never reach this point, not because it is complicated, but because logging by hand is tedious and they quit by week two.
What this means for you
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Until your numbers are in front of you, every "adjustment" to your trading is a guess dressed up as a decision.
That is what a journal is for. The Reign Trading Journal auto-logs every trade, including the ones your robot takes, and shows you your win rate, profit factor, expectancy, and your best and worst setups without the manual upkeep. See your edge, then sharpen it.
